uniforms for all

Common Threadz is a nonprofit organization that provides orphaned children in developing countries with school uniforms.

In many places, children are denied access to schooling if they cannot afford to purchase the required uniform; not only does not having the proper attire prevent these children from learning but it often stigmatizes them as social outcasts. The organization is funded in several ways- "in addition to our more conventional fundraising efforts such as donations, grants, in-kind contributions, sponsorships and events, we also utilize our socially-conscious, fashion-forward apparel [t-shirts] as a means to provide school uniforms to orphans and vulnerable children in developing nations". Common Threadz commissions artists to donate their designs, a representation of a social issue that the artist feels passionate about, for the t-shirts and asks that they use their "celebrity" to raise awareness. The procedes from the t-shirt sales pay for the school uniforms and the remainder of the money goes to a nonprofit organization chosen by the artist.

The Alice in Wonderland-esque shirt featured above was designed by Meg Hunt and represents "cancer being like a war with your body -- making you awkward and feeling trapped within someplace you used to feel safe, and trying positively to break free."; the additional revenue for this shirt will support the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
