I first heard about up and coming model Arlenis Pena on the Fashionista blog. It was amidst all the talk about July's Italian Vogue (soon to hit stands in the US!) and the ongoing discussion about the dearth of models of color in the fashion industry.
Pena, who was discovered in her native Dominican Republic at the tender young age of 18, was immediately signed, making her runway debut at the Banana Republic holiday show, which was quickly followed by a stunt in the Christian Dior Resort show this past March.
Pena has a very beautiful and distinct look, one that is especially refreshing amongst all the Eastern European look-a-likes that dominate the runways these days. I think she has the potential to reach Chanel Iman status- so look out for her! Bonus: she'll also be featured in this month's Italian Vogue- I'll try and post a pic as soon as I get my hands on one.
